All change again

Postby RCMike » Wed Sep 06, 2017 7:43 pm

In my never ending quest to test all known 4x4's, my new ride is a ..................mk3 Shogun SWB (rear locker option).

Long story short, the D3 has now gone (as well as the Trooper), so a few weeks without a 4x4 has left me twiddling my thumbs whilst looking at caravans for next year. I had initially started looking at a pickup as a tow car/laner, but they all seem to have been to the moon and back with a ton of bricks inside the cab. Then started looking at various LWB trucks and whilst browsing, came across a really nice auto diesel mk3 swb. It was so nice, i bought it. Still a pretty good weight and power for towing and as a bonus also fits in the rather restrictive spare car parking space i have and will do better on the lanes.

Picking it up tomorrow (then starting the not too long list of common preventative things that mk3's need).

Slight downside is that its got almost new road tyres on (upside is that i don't think its ever been off the tarmac) - i'll probably go the AT route this time rather than muds.

Picked it up this evening - drove really well.

Currently thinking of using my old set of scorpion ATR's (2nd set i had from the D3) and just swap the tyres over. The ATR's are quite a mild AT but got to be better than the road tyres currently on the Shogun (very wide Scorpion Zero's). Other option is 4 new AT's (£££).

Anybody want to buy 4 almost new Scorpion Zeros (285x55x18)?

I might leave the shiny side tubes on as they dont affect the ground clearance and give a little sill protection.

The front air dam / mud scoop however will probably have to go.

But - first on the list will be a few mk3 preventative items (fuel filler lines and top cam chain guide).
Next - Tow bar

Thanks Chaps.

No major mods on this one as it will be towing a tin tent (hopefully) as well as laning. Still, should be ok for rock climbing - just might need to avoid any deep mud ruts.

Lifts are a bit difficult on these so it will be a tyre change and see how it goes.
