iOS6 - Don't bother?

Postby Alterastro » Thu Sep 20, 2012 7:22 am

Well I updated to iOS6 on my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 and I'm disappointed to say the least :?

Here are the new features and my thoughts:

Maps (Flyover and turn-by-turn directions)
iPhone 4 - Can't use the flyover or spoken directions
iPad 3 - Flyover is very limited, mainly to US cities
Now they aren't using Google maps I've lost streetview which I used a lot. The directions aren't as good now either with 3 options of routes which seem to take you the long way around with no option to 'move' the route or settings for things like 'fastest', 'shortest' etc. E.g. from my house to Paris it gave me the option of M20 to folkstone ferry or M2 to Dover, but I want M20 to Dover! The details are very inaccurate too - places nearby are in totally the wrong place and they rely on a third party for more info. There isn't nearly as much info or places as there was on Google :(

Do not disturb
Iphone 4 - Not something I imagine using really
iPad - not available

VIP Mail
iPhone 4 - Nice feature, but will I use it?
iPad - as above

Siri
iPhone 4 - Not available
iPad - seems to work well, but something of a gimmick and I wonder if I will ever use it

Shared Photo Streams
Basically an easy way to share photos

Passbook
iphone 4 - is installed, but doesn't work. I've googled it and there is a problem. I wonder how many companies over here will utilise it anyway?
iPad - Not available

Safari
Some tweaks to safari which allow sharing tab across devices and offline reading. Not sure how much I would use either on my devices.

FaceTime over cellular
Great in theory, but it doesn't work with Vodafone unless you pay an extra £10 per month and would I use it anyway?

Phone app changes
iPhone 4 - probably the only useful update - allows to to automatically send a text if you cant take a call etc
iPad - not available as you can't make calls

So all in all a bit disappointing. The thing I use most (maps) is now rendered useless until and if Google bring out their own app.

iOS6? More like iOS5.2 IMHO. If you use maps a lot, don't bother until Google bring out their own one.

Nick :gr8:

I have to agree with you Nick it aint a new version more of a tweek on the older one, but the best bit for me are the flagged mail box, this will make my business life so much easier, and the tasks are now easier to use and go across all devices. I already have a 3rd party app for satnav, so never really used google maps, nor will I use i-maps as they grab data on the move, something that I did not like as my orange phone signal is rubbish. Apart from that it is not really an improvement but I hope my iphone 5 will be, although I doubt it but it will look cool

Updated my iPhone 4S yesterday , everything seems to work fine that's changed on it.
Very impressed with the new google maps , tried it today and works more like a sat nav then it did before and keeps up with the driving and comes up with the road name of the next junction etc.

Unless you live on google maps, or use YouTube a lot, then yes it's a gain over the standard ios5, it's just not such an improvement as the last real upgrade on the iOS front.

Ps - I have it on my iPhone 4S as my iPhone 5 has not yet been delivered :(

ive upgraded to Ios6 phone seems a bit quicker now, dont really use the maps too much as have a TomTom for that, and there is a free youtube app to download, which is loads better than the old one!

I just looked at an iPhone 5, the docking is different so it wouldn't sit on my bedside speaker dock.
