Illegal activity on Salisbury Plain quashed

A quad bike that was recently abandoned on Salisbury Plain during an operation which aims to deter people from taking part in illegal moto-cross and 4x4 off-road activities has been crushed.
Operation Aston is a joint Operation between the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Wiltshire Police and Military Police staff. The latest operation was conducted over three days last month in an effort to educate people about the impact their actions have on the plain and to deter them from taking part in illegal, dangerous and damaging activity.
The operation concentrated on the eastern area of the plain around Bulford/Tidworth and particularly around Sidbury Hill. The bike that was crushed was abandoned by its owner after it was spotted driving illegally.
Lt Col Stewart Andrews, the MOD’s Senior Training Safety Officer for Salisbury Plain Training Area said:
“We have crushed this vehicle to deter further illegal activities by bikers and quads in the future; we hope it will make people realise that we take illegal activity seriously.
“At 94,000 acres Salisbury Plain Training Area is a ‘hotspot’ for off-road activity.
“The Plain is first and foremost a military training area and the military are constantly participating in risk-to-life activities. When people disregard the rules and leave the Public Rights of Way and MOD roads, they can put themselves and others at risk and can also damage the fragile environment.”

“We encourage people to be safe on the plain, and respect the rights of other users. Any criminal activity in progress or suspicious activity can be reported to Wiltshire Police on 999 or 101”
