spare wheel carrier mod for 33" wheels

Post by mudmagnet » Sat Oct 10, 2015 12:47 pm

after buying a 265/75/16 spare tyre it wouldn't fit on the spare wheel carrier as it was too big
so a quick look online and found that if you flip the carrier upside down and drilled some new holes with a bit of modding all will be good

so off came the carrier and spacers and if you leave the spacers the right way up then turn the carrier 180 you can get to see where to drill the holes

Holes drilled

then i marked out where to cut a hole to miss the rear wiper arm as now it is flipped upside down the wiper arm hits the top of the carrier

Hole cut and carrier cleaned up and painted,
i don't like fitting rusty things back on :D

and finally with the new wheel on and there is about 10mm gap between bumper and tyre
my 265/75/16 measure about 32" so you should just about get a 33" tyre on the carrier with this mod and the best part is it does'nt cost a penny unless you paint it like I did

You can buy modded carriers for bigger tyres but why buy when you can adapt what you have for free :gr8:

Not sure if it is the same for a d1 but I found you could get a 265/75/16 tyre on the carrier without any mod when I had a d1

When I did this mod for my 33" tyres it didn't quite give enough height.

I had to raise it up another ~20mm. No pics but I basically went back to the original center whole and re-drilled the top and bottom instead.
