SJ 413 Violent Juddering over 30mph

Postby Mr J on Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:16 am

My SJ has devloped a shocking judder as soon as I go over a certain speed (around 31/32 mph). It doesn't seem to matter what gear im in and below 30mph its fine. Has anyone got any ideas what this could be?

Thanks in advance

hi alan,is the judder, coming through the seat????if so
you should start by checking your propshaft universal joints for movement.

Hi Daz, its hard to tell as everythings juddering. The floor, dashboard and seat. I'll start by checking the propshaft universal joints and see what i find. Thanks for your help.

are you sure you havent knocked some balance weights off a wheel, i have had some very scary juddering caused by unbalanced wheels

I had a look at the weekend and didn't find too much to report. I found a bit of play in the propshaft from the centre diff to the rear. I could move it about 1/2 centimetre. Im not sure whether its meant to do that or not as there's a section in the propshaft with a rubber casing (which is where the movement is). Is it likely that thats designed to absorb movement?

I've spoken to a friend who thinks the juddering is too violent to be caused by a wheel missing balance weights, i will check it out anyway to make sure.

hi mr j,if your wheel balancing is out,you get judder around 50-60 mph & upwards.

not sure of your steering set up but i had a very similar judder in my disco but over 55mph so violent the entire vehicle felt like it was disintegrating, checked out some items suggested here but the culprit ended up being a damaged steering damper, slightly bent, had lost all it's oil and had no resistance at all, replaced and runs smooth again.

1/2 cm prop movement doesn't sound great tho!

probally transfer case mounts have gone mate, (i think some fit ford or landy ones as HD mounts ;) )
sj's dont have centre diffs the prop goes straight into the transfer box, prop moving doesnt sound to good, maybe check ujs and spline grease.

mr j i had this in my 413 earlier this year in low speeds it was fine, above 25 mph it wasnt a big fan,

tested everything prop's, fitted a rocklobster t-case and nothing worked even had diffs out, then the clutch died while rying to climb a bank, best advice for the clutch is take engine and gearbox out as a lump do clutch on the bench put together and fit as a lump, i have memories of the 4 days me and a mate (both of us are engineers) to get the damn gearbox off, fit new plates and thrust gearing then offer the gearbox up to the still fitted engine

but check everything before you consider the clutch

Sorry for the slow response guys.

I took it to a mechanic a couple of weeks ago and it turned out to be the UJ's on front and back props. Thanks for all your help.

JC413Samuraui -By coincidence my clutch is on its way out now but the juddering has been sorted.

Cheers
